The Project
Eagle Pass Border Crossing is a land port of entry, one of the few international border crossing points that is dedicated to commercial truck and railroad traffic. At this land port, a customs border patrol officer must maintain the crossing at all times in order to collect duties and enforce customs and navigation laws. Lighting plays a key role in aiding the border patrol agents to do their job, as well as in creating the ultimate in safe environments. This project called for a solution that would illuminate a large amount of space while keeping glare at a minimum. The system had to meet significant security criteria and energy code requirements, as well as adhere to sustainable building practices set by the General Services Administration (GSA).
The GSA chose Philips Wide-Lite SMLS highmast lighting system with Aktra luminaires. Aktra’s heavy duty housing and precise beam control provided the perfect solution for the Eagle Pass Border Crossing. The highmast system allowed use of 12 luminaires with only one system, producing a large amount of uniform light across the inspection areas. The system has provided excellent performance after over a decade of operation.
