The Project

The Main Street Bridge crosses the St. Johns River in downtown Jacksonville and spans four lanes of traffic. Due to its location, the bridge was to play an integral part in the city’s skyline, and was to become one of the city’s future landmarks. The design team was challenged to specify a lighting solution with exceptional performance and flexibility, while at the same time being able to withstand high levels of moisture and vibration.

The architect and engineer team chose Wide-Lite's IFX marine grade floodlight to illuminate the bridge.. IFX provided even illumination that accentuated the bridge’s complex truss systems, making it look like a work of art, while also being sturdy enough to withstand the harsh weather and environmental conditions perfectly. The specifier even added blue filters to wash the bridge in the color of a favorite college team in the area.

In 2004, the city allotted $1.2 million to light the three additional bridges that cross the St. Johns River. Philips Wide-Lite IFX was the fixture of choice for all three. Together, the four bridges are landmarks of the city.
