The Project
RUMC is a not-for-profit academic medical center in Chicago, Illinois. Rush University is home to one of the first medical colleges in the Midwest and one of the nation's top-ranked nursing colleges, as well as graduate programs in allied health, health systems management and biomedical research.
In 2006, Rush University Medical Center began a 10-year project to build new facilities, renovate existing buildings and adopt state-of-the-art new technologies. Known as the Rush Transformation, RUMC contributes to a healthier environment for their patients, employees and all of Chicago by incorporating numerous environmentally sustainable features. They are seeking Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for its new hospital building. In addition, Rush's current facilities will be renovated following the opening of the new hospital.
In preparation for these renovations, mock ups have been installed in a variety of venues in and around the Medical Center including a high profile installation within the existing main parking facility. Rush realizes that the Parking Garage is the first impression of their facilities for many patrons. The main parking facility is an enclosed garage with all floors feeding into a central floor with a covered walkway that connects to the Atrium and Professional Building. This is the site of a state of the art renovation and green technologies that includes environmentally friendly finish, flooring, striping, signage and LED lighting – VizorLED.
A single row of VizorLED (VZ38-100-B) luminaires replace two 150W HPS with a combined power draw of 376W per bay. At only, 121 input watts, RUMC has proven that it can cut its consumption for illumination by over two-thirds while improving the overall visual environment. VizorLEDs unique Non-Direct View (NDV) optics provide comfortable, low glare illumination for pedestrians and visual comfort in the drive lane for drivers which result in an increased level of safety at the facility. Crisp, white light with high with a warm color temperature (4250K) and ~5% uplight adds to increased visual acuity, comfort and sense of security. Additionally, due to the geometry of one fixture per bay solution, Rush has reduced light trespass into their surroundings.
Increased vertical distribution and volumetric illumination (Horizontal:Vertical ratio ~1:1) make Rush a premier destination for visitors to view VizorLED and the promise of next generation lighting (LED) technology.
